Symphony No. 2 (Dvořák)

The Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 4, B. 12 was composed by Antonín Dvořák between August and October 1865. Dvořák sent the score to be bound, but could not pay the binder, who then kept the score. It was generally well received.[1]

Form

The work is in four movements:

  1. Allegro con moto
  2. Poco adagio
  3. Scherzo: Allegro con brio
  4. Finale: Allegro con fuoco

A typical performance of the work has a duration of about fifty minutes.

Instrumentation

The work is scored for an orchestra of two flutes, piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings.
